Tutorial Tuesday - Lace Crowns

Good Morning, hope you are well! Exciting news first: my new blog  is now up and running! Your invitation is on the side, would love it if you would follow along - open the invite and it will take you there!...

Today's tutorial is very fitting as it makes up part of the costume I am making for my daughter's birthday - Lace Crowns...

You will need:

Piece of wide Lace,
Glue,
Fabric Stiffener (I was kindly sent some 'Stiffen Stuff' by my friend Debi),
Paint & Brush,
Glitter Glue and Jewels,
Glass Bottle or jar,
Old Newspaper.

Step 1:

Take a piece of lace, (ones with a curvy top work best), and glue the ends together to make a circle...

Step 2:

Liberally spray your lace with the fabric stiffener and place onto a glass bottle or jar the same size to stiffen up...

Step 3:

When stiffened up, gently remove from glass (you may need to twist slightly to unstick it).

Lay on some paper and paint a pretty colour...

It may go a little floppy whilst the paint is wet, but it will stiffen right up again when the paint is dry.

Step 4:

Add a coating of glitter glue for some sparkle...

...Then stick on some pretty jewels

I made a tall, thin gold one too - which is my favourite! I used acrylic paint on the gold one, and I think it has dried harder, which makes it more sturdy.

Voilà - stunning Lace Crowns, perfect for any pretty Princess ;)

Hope you enjoyed that tute and don't forget to pop on over and join the party!

Your Opinion Please....

As you can see, I have been having a little play around with the colours and just wanted some honest opinions. I really do love pink, but I thought it was a bit much, so have added in more subtle greys to be a bit easier on the eyes.

Does it look better or did you prefer the pink???

I am also going to retire my 'Rustic Star Designs' blog as I haven't really posted on there very much. I will be incorporating any posts from there that I don't want to lose to over here. Apologies if anything crops up that you have seen / read before :)

I am also working on a new Party blog, so will eventually remove that element from this blog.

Twinkle's Tutorials & Craft Time will be just that - tutorials and crafty makes. Anything I make to do with the parties or the actual party posts will be over on my new blog. I hope to be able to bring handmade party inspiration and ideas to other party-planning peeps!

My new blog is:

There are no posts up yet, will let you know when it is up and running!

Thanks for your opinions and comments, much appreciated as always!

Hugs

Tutorial Tuesday - 2 Types of Tassels

hmmm, now that's a tongue-twister :)

Thankfully, my boys are on the mend - thanks for the comments!

Today, I have some easy tutes on how to make 2 types of tassels. When I think of tassels, elegance and opulence come to mind. Perfect for the decor I'm working on. Excuse the lighting in the photos, I have been burning the midnight oil trying to get a head start on what I have planned for this next party.

First up we have Mini Tassels made from embroidery thread...

You will need:

Embroidery Thread,
Scissors,
Ruler or Tape Measure,
Piece of card the length you want your tassel to be.

Step 1:

Cut 2 Pieces of thread about 10cms long...

...lay one piece of thread at the top of your cardboard piece and start to wrap your embroidery thread around the cardboard making sure you also wrap around the piece of thread...

...keep going until you are happy with the fullness...

Step 2:

Tie the top piece of loose thread in a double knot...

...take your scissors and slide underneath the thread at the bottom of the cardboard...

...and cut...

...remove from cardboard...

Step 3:

Take the other piece of loose thread and tie around your tassel in a double knot about 1cm down...

...pull the thread pieces down, so that they form part of the tassel and snip off any excess...

...you can use the top threads to tie your tassel onto a bookmark or use as an embellishment. I will be popping mine onto the corners of a mini pillow.

Voilà pretty mini tassels!

Next up is Tissue Paper Tassels...

You will need:

A sheet of tissue paper,
Scissors,
Ruler or tape measure,
Craft wire or tape.

Step 1:

Cut your sheet of tissue in 2 and layer them...

...fold back up following the original lines...

Step 2:

Cut from the edge of the tissue upwards (making sure the folded edge is at the top) in 1.5cm strips all the way across...

...stop cutting about 4cms from the folded top...

Step 3:

Open all the way back up...

...you should have a fringe either side. Start rolling up your layered tissue sheets...

(if you have a metallic sheet make sure the shiny side is on the outside.)

...keep rolling and smoothing out the fringe as you go to stop any tangles, until you reach the end...

Step 4:

Pick up your tassel and fold in the middle...

...and twist around to form a loop...

...secure with some craft wire or pretty tape...

You can then thread ribbon through the loop to hang up or make a few more and create a garland.

Voilà - tissue paper tassels to add a touch of glamour to your party or room decor!

And if you are feeling in a tassel-y mood then I saw on Totally Tutorials today this fab tute by Fleur de Lis for making a longer, fuller tassel using a whole skein of embroidery thread. Very elegant!

Hope you enjoyed those and any questions just leave a comment :)

MIY Dress Form

Well I am still here, just haven't been able to put even a semblance of a blog post together. My middle boy came down with Chicken Pox, then unfortunately shared it with his baby brother :( Poor little mite is covered in red spots. Needless to say not a lot of sleep has been had around here! Anyway I think we are over the worst of it now, so I have been able to squeeze in a bit of crafting. I also took advantage of being 'housebound' by sitting cuddled up to my little boys and doing lots of party-planning - pinteresting, researching, blog stalking, bookmarking, budgeting and a lot of other words beginning with 'ing' lol!

As previously mentioned my daughter's party has gone to a whole new level - this year she told me she wanted a 'proper' party, not that she doesn't love my handmade specials, just that she wants it in a hall, not the house so she can invite all her friends!!!

So I resigned myself to hiring a hall, some entertainment and setting out plates of sandwiches. But THEN the wheels starting turning in my head, (a bit rusty to start with), and I thought I could make a 'few' things, such as table decor, my kid's costumes etc. So my handmade party specials are about to be unleashed in the real world! Stay tuned for further posts.

Anyway, I have long admired the pretty fabric dress forms seen in the shops and I have always wanted one - and if I am to make my daughter's dream dress then I really need one to set the dress on whilst tweaking etc but I can't really justify the cost, so I thought if I can't buy one then I will make one!

...a bit lop sided maybe, but I am really pleased with how it turned out!

I took an old cushion, a child's hanger, (one of the square-ish shaped ones that come with outfits in shops), the tube from a wrapping paper roll, tea towel, piece of felt, ribbon, hot glue, newspaper, paint, tin can, wooden chopping board and embellishments to make it pretty.

Here is a run down if you want to Make-It-Yourself...

Cut a hole in your cushion pad on the top seam, remove half of the stuffing, then insert the hanger and push the remainder of the stuffing around the hanger, glue the corners of the cushion pad down to create 'shoulders' and 'hips'...

...tie a piece of ribbon around the 'waist' portion of the hanger, then move the stuffing around until you are happy with the proportions.

Cover and glue the hanging hook with a piece of neutral coloured felt to create a 'neck'...

...then glue on a piece of neutral coloured fabric, (I used an unused tea towel), tucking and gluing to the shape of the cushion...

...I tied another piece of ribbon to cinch in the 'waist' again.

I added a piece of wide lace to the neck join to cover it and some pretty buttons on some thin gold ribbon...

I Took a tube from the inside of  a wrapping paper roll and packed it tightly with old newspaper to make it sturdy (you can also place a thinner tube inside for more stability then stuff.) I then painted it and left to dry. I chose gold acrylic as I already had it and I wanted it to look like it was metal...

I then cut a hole in the base of the fabric covered cushion pad and inserted the now dry tube halfway into it. I packed a bit of the stuffing around the tube to hold in place. You can then run a line of glue around where the tube meets the hole if you like.

For the stand I used a tin can glued onto a round wooden chopping board. You may remember I used this for my oldest boy's trail mix station...

...it was covered in twine. I then removed the twine, covered the tin can in red paper and painted the chopping board blue to use in my middle boy's cupcake decorating station...

...and now I have upturned it and painted the chopping board gold, covered the tin can in gold satin fabric and added a few fabric and lace rosettes...

(you can also add a piece of felt or felt pads to the bottom to stop it scratching any surfaces).

...I inserted the painted tube into the tin can and again packed tightly with paper and glued the end of the gold satin fabric into it.

Voilà a Make-It-Yourself dress form, which cost nothing as I recycled / re-purposed and used stuff from my stash!

And yes, it really does work - it is obviously not correctly sized, but for holding a dress or top for display purposes or for freeing up your hands it is perfect! What do you think? Me, I love it!

Hope you are all well!
